Why Textile Waste Matters, and How Reuse Helps

Clothing is cheaper and more disposable than it has ever been, and that convenience has a cost. Textile waste is now one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world, and India is no exception. Understanding why it matters is the first step to doing something about it.

The hidden cost of a new garment

A single new item of clothing carries a large invisible footprint. Growing and processing the raw material, dyeing the fabric and manufacturing the garment can take thousands of litres of water and a significant amount of energy, and it adds to carbon emissions along the way. Every time a wearable garment is thrown out and replaced, that entire cost is paid again from scratch.

What happens when clothes are thrown away

Discarded clothes usually end up in landfill. Natural fibres take time and space to break down, while synthetic fabrics such as polyester can persist for a very long time and shed tiny plastic fibres as they degrade. A garment that took so many resources to make ends up creating a second problem at the end of its life.

Reuse beats recycling

The waste hierarchy is simple: reduce first, then reuse, and only then recycle. Reuse sits above recycling for a reason. When a garment is worn again as-is, it avoids the entire resource cost of shredding, reprocessing and remaking fabric. Recycling is valuable, but it should be the safety net, not the starting point.
